I started taking Leflunomide yesterday morning. I felt fine all day apart from a slightly metallic taste in my mouth. I have been fine all day today.....until about an hour ago when I had an awful bout of diarrhoea. Surely 36 hours is too early to have it if it is a side effect from the drug. Does anyone have any experience here as advice would be appreciated. There is a stomach bug doing the rounds at work so maybe that is the culprit.

I would think it is unlikely to be the Leflunomide after 36 hours but you never know. If it does not settle down in 48 hours ring your GP. I did have to give up this drug because of tummy problems but that was six months in when the drug had really built up in my system.

Hope it clears up soon for you and keep the fluids up.

Jackie

Hi
I agree with Jackie.I think it's probably a bit early for side effects but i'm no doctor. There is a nasty bug going round our area(had it myself last week) that causes sickness and diarrhoea.
If it carries on give your rhuemy nurse a ring for some advice

Hi Naomi

I got the metallic taste when I started it last October and occasionally get bouts of "the trots!!" . But, it's nothing compared to when I took methotrexate!! As I said in my post (which you commented on, mentioning you were starting leflunomide) it's working really well for me and my hands are brilliant now. See how you get on for a few more days and if it gets worse or unbearable then contact the doc. Good luck with it, I hope you're ok on it!

I am despairing. Now I keep getting hives and have developed bruises on my stomach and legs. My nurse had advised me to stop the drug for a week and then try again. I really want this to work after failing on mtx tablets then injections. I want my life back and want an end to the pain and these goals seem further and further away.

hi Naomi,

really sorry to hear you're going through the mill,

i know how desparate i felt when Methotrexate and then Hydroxy didn't work for me after a year on it,

although i didn't have any side affects.

don't give up as although i am not yet fully under control now i am on Humira my joints are so much better ( in fact two swollen joints have gone back to normal )

so i am sure you will get the right cocktail of drugs but unfortunately it does take time which is the sad part.

wishing you well,

Suzanne x

Hi Naomi
Don't despair. Your nurse has a good idea, stopping for a week then trying again - at least you'll then know if it was the leflunomide or an illness. There is an upside if you can't tolerate either MTX or leflunomide - which happened to me - it meant that I got put onto the new anti-tnf's very quickly and have been great ever since.
Unfortunately it takes a bit of time and is trial and error with all these drugs as we all respond so differently.
I had some steriods to tide me over between drugs, so that might be an option to mention to your nurse if you need to phone her again.
Take care
Anne
